Every family's situation is unique, but most families come to Jeffco Virtual Academy (JVA) for our flexibility, course options and asynchronous mode. We are a Jeffco Public School based primarily online delivering asynchronous classes where work is completed weekly.

JVA will prepare students for lifelong learning and continual growth through creative and rigorous online learning pathways and diverse learning communities.

Mission

JVA believes where a student lives should not determine their access to a quality education. A world-class education is delivered through rigor, relevance and relationships. Jeffco's graduation requirements, responsive instruction and access to options such as postsecondary enrollment and Advanced Placement courses help ensure a rigorous education. Jeffco Virtual Academy will expose students to challenging coursework with academic and social support.

Education must be relevant to our students for it to have meaning. Online learning in itself is relevant to today's students who have generally been exposed to computers and the internet as part of their daily lives. Our classes require students to apply their knowledge, concepts and skills to solve real-world problems.

Relationships are the glue that binds students and staff together in one common learning community. Through various learning connections, both online and face-to-face, students will experience more than just a series of online courses at JVA – they will be part of a community of learners.

“Being a student of public (in-person) school since kindergarten, making the choice to switch to online school was something I didn’t expect to do, but I found that it could benefit my ability to succeed, along with my lifestyle. I’ve chosen to make the switch because public (in-person) school has become increasingly challenging. I’ve found that the classroom environment no longer gives me the feeling that I’m able to present by best work. Recently, going to school has become rather stressful for me with school shootings, complementing the overall classroom attitude that students have towards each other in the sense that I don’t always feel that there’s an open, safe, accepting space for me to work. “When asked the question, 'What brings you to JVA?', I can confidently answer with excitement and ease. I want to take an online class at JVA because I want to, first, explore all of my academic options, second, because I may find it to be a more comfortable learning environment, and third, because there is more one-on-one interaction as well as a greater ability to concentrate. I found what I was looking for at my current high school but, I want to reconnect with myself and get away from how draining high school actually is. People my age are constantly worrying about their 'image' and 'reputation.' I saw how it can consume a person. I am fortunate enough to not let somebody’s opinion of me affect me but I don’t want that type of high school experience for myself. I want the best for myself and I’m willing to work hard for it. Misconceptions About JVA

Misconception: Online courses are easier.

Misconception: Coursework is self-paced.

Misconception: Students continue to second-quarter classes regardless of first-quarter performance.

Misconception: Attendance isn’t taken.

Misconception: Students work alone.

All course content is available online through Jeffco Schoology 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Teachers work from our campus one day a week during office hours and schedule their other eight-hour school days between 7 a.m.-10 p.m. to best serve and support students throughout the day. Our teachers are highly qualified and we have the support of an instructional coach, instructional technology coach, learning specialists, a school psychologist, counselors, community liaisons and a social emotional learning specialist.

Misconception: I should work alone.

Other misconceptions

We are all digital and paperless.
I don’t need a schedule.
I should wait for someone to contact me.
I don’t really have a teacher.
I don’t need to work on my classwork regularly.
Deadlines are flexible.
I don’t need to organize. My online work is already organized by my teacher.
If I have tech issues, I should wait for time to fix them.
I have no one to help me when I struggle.
If my computer or internet isn’t working, I can’t keep working.
It’s all about completion. It doesn’t matter how well I do on the assignments, it just matters that I complete them. If I complete assignments, I should get a good grade.
If I have anxiety, that will be “fixed” when I go to school online.
All modifications and accommodations can be applied in an online setting.
This isn’t a “public” school.
Online will be “easier.”
I can turn in all my work in the last week.
