Many JVA students attend classes while they are outside of the country, but you need to provide documentation that establishes proof of residency in the state of Colorado to be enrolled. Asynchronous learning from a distance works best with strong time management and engagement with the course materials.  If synchronous interventions are required, a student may not be able to continue with their courses at JVA from a distance. 

At this time JVA does not offer concurrent enrollment courses. However, the district offers College for All at the high school level. High school students can also earn up to two years of college credits (with no tuition requirements) in the ASCENT and TREP programs. 

We do offer credit recovery options for students enrolled in classes full-time at JVA.  Through these classes students can recover .5 credits (a semester worth of credit) in a quarter (9 weeks). 

• Families may contact the school to inquire about and develop a detailed plan with approval from the school administration. Part-time students must enroll in school at least 90 hours per semester.
• Please refer to the Homeschool Guidelines in Jeffco, and contact our office with questions. 

• Full-time students at JVA should work with their counselor to discuss options.  JVA will do our best to work with a brick and mortar school on course options, based on availability.
• Many JVA students are also able to participate in Warren Tech programs. 
• We have a part-time program for students who want to take a course or two with JVA, but stay primarily enrolled at a brick and mortar school.

JVA is an accredited Alternative Education Campus (AEC) in the State of Colorado and one of several AECs that operate within Jeffco Public Schools. We are accredited to serve high risk students in grades 7-12, up to the age of 21 years old. We have many students who have re-enrolled to get diplomas. We work closely with Jeffco’s Office of Student Engagement to determine the AEC school that best fits the student’s needs. JVA is accredited to serve students up to the age of 21 years old. Students who are over the age of 21 are encouraged to reach out to the Office of Student Engagement to discuss the GED and other diploma options within Jeffco.

You may enroll as a full-time student at JVA, as long as you are able to provide proof of residency within the state of Colorado.  Part-time must already be enrolled in a Jeffco school.
 

JVA offers full-time courses for students in 7th through 12th grade.

Teachers can see when students are logging in and completing work.  We follow the Jeffco attendance policy, which is detailed in the student handbook. We take attendance several times a week, to help encourage student engagement and success. Please visit the JVA Attendance page to view our attendance policy.

Attendance forms and quizzes are available at the top of the “materials” section of each Schoology course.
 

JVA classes are asynchronous, so this shouldn’t be a problem.  If part-time students need to meet virtually with their JVA teacher, they can contact the instructor to set up a time that works for both parties.
 

Please report absences on the JVA website (scroll down to the “Reporting Absences” section: https://virtual.jeffcopublicschools.org/about/attendance. All reported absences will be excused. Unexcused absences can lead to attendance and truancy issues.

Success will be very difficult at JVA without regular access to the internet.  If you do not have internet access and cannot get internet access, JVA won’t be a good fit for you.

JVA’s primary learning platform, Schoology, includes an immersive reader that allows students to have the work "read" to them. We also have access to Google Read and Write software as well as other spelling and grammar software such as Grammarly.

However, we have many students in many different situations and can connect students and families with district services that can help. If you are struggling, (failing one or more of your classes) your teachers may require synchronous and/or on campus meetings until you get your grades back up.

• Section 504 is a federal law that protects the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

• As a public school in Jeffco, we follow 504 law.  Please reach out to Jeffco Virtual Academy counselors and our 504 coordinator to discuss options.

Most of your coursework is asynchronous and your teachers will usually publish a week’s worth of work at a time (due the next week), so you do not need to be online at certain times of day to do it.  However, if you are struggling, (failing one or more of your classes) your teachers may require synchronous activities or meetings until you get your grades back up.

You might need to go to the JVA building for testing, or you may be required to attend face to face interventions if you are failing your classes.

Teachers post contact information in their classes, and the JVA website has a directory of all staff members with contact information.  JVA teachers should respond to emails and texts within 24 hours during the school week.

We do not offer tutoring, but teachers are available to answer questions about assignments and work.

Each full-time student has an advisement teacher who will build a relationship and be the point of contact all year. Teachers also get to know students through discussion boards, work products, and feedback. There are weekly office hours listed for all JVA staff members, and there are weekly face-to-face activities at Jeffco Virtual Academy.  

• JVA follows the Jeffco Public Schools assessment calendar.  
• The MAP test is given three times a year to students in 7th through 10th grades.  MAP covers ELA/Reading, Math and Science.  
• In-person CMAS testing is given in 7th (ELA, math, and social studies) , 8th (ELA, math and science), and 11th (science).  
• Ninth and tenth graders take the PSAT in-person in the spring.  
• The SAT is taken in-person in the spring by 11th graders. 
• ACCESS is administered in-person in January for ELL students in grades 7 through 10.

• All full-time students are scheduled in an Advisement course, which requires both asynchronous and synchronous instruction
• Students log in to classes through Schoology
• We do have assignment deadlines each week. But within the week students have flexibility around when they complete that work.
• Students who are struggling in their classes will receive academic supports that may include one or more of the following: office hours with teachers, one-on-one support meetings with teachers, and synchronous intervention classes (including credit recovery).

JVA is mostly asynchronous. JRLP is mostly synchronous with specified meeting times for each class.

Students should expect to spend up to an hour for each class.  Credit Recovery students should expect to spend up to two hours per class per day to be successful.

No, our classes are asynchronous, but not “self-paced”. There are weekly deadlines and students have flexibility about when they work on those assignments within the week.  Students who are struggling (failing one or more courses) may be required to participate in synchronous interventions until they are passing all of their courses.

We do not currently offer honors or AP courses.

JVA courses are often different from brick and mortar courses but are just as rigorous and follow the same standards.  Because the courses are asynchronous and online, there is an expectation that you will be able to complete them independently, manage your time well, and communicate with your teachers when you need help or have questions.

Work with your counselor to choose electives that you are interested in that help you move towards graduation and post-secondary opportunities.

Yes, many JVA students participate in activities like sports at their home schools.  You must meet and maintain eligibility requirements and get permission from your home school.

Because we work closely with many schools across the district, JVA follows the district policy regarding withdrawals and accompanying grades. There will be a deadline each semester, after which a student will receive either a WP or WF upon withdrawal.
