Mathematics in Jeffco
Jeffco mathematics teaching and learning embraces a problem-based approach, grounded in the belief that every student possesses the potential to master grade-level mathematics. In our program, students learn math by doing math.
Teachers invite all students to contribute to mathematical learning, center student thinking, and respond as students develop conceptual understanding and essential mathematical skills.
Mathematics at Jeffco Virtual Academy
High School Credit for Middle School Courses
Students have the opportunity to take advanced coursework at Jeffco Virtual Academy.
These courses follow the same Colorado Academic Standards and curriculum as the courses offered at the high school level and represent one way that JVA provides accelerated and challenging coursework to our students.
Successful completion of any of the eligible courses listed below will automatically award the student high school credit. This means that the course name and letter grade will appear on the student’s high school transcript. The grade will not be calculated into the student’s high school GPA.
Please note: If a student takes one of the below courses and would like to opt out of having the course count toward high school credit, they must work with their ninth-grade counselor.
Which courses are eligible?
- Mathematics: Algebra 1, Geometry or higher.
- All students graduating from a Jeffco high school are required to complete three years of mathematics, in addition to an additional demonstration of readiness. For more information, see Jeffco graduation requirements.
- World Languages: Any course Level 1 or above, or a 101-102 combination.
The above courses are exclusive of summer school courses, as stated in Jeffco School Board policy IKF.
Jeffco Math Acceleration
BACKGROUND
Acceleration is an academic intervention that moves students through an educational program at a rate faster or at an age that is younger than typical. It is about creating a better match between the readiness and motivation of a student and the level and pace of instruction. There are multiple opportunities for students to accelerate their mathematics course of study during middle school and high school. Please see our math pathways visual guide to learn more about these opportunities.
The Math Team and the GT Team work together to gather and study data in order to make the best recommendation for each student
MATH ACCELERATION PROCESS
Acceleration in math follows a protocol co-developed and co-managed by the GT Team and the Math Team. The math acceleration process is initiated in the spring prior to the year a student is being considered for acceleration. The decision to accelerate a student in math must be completed no later than September 30 of the year the acceleration is put into place. The Steps in the Process include:
- Gathering a body of evidence that includes multiple data points. Additional testing may be necessary.
-
Analyzing data and making an instructional recommendation.
-
Collaboratively determining the most appropriate math pathway for a student. (Appropriate building level stakeholders will be part of the pathway determination)
-
Annual review of progress for students on an accelerated pathway in math
QUALIFYING BODY OF EVIDENCE
A qualifying body of evidence is used to determine readiness for math acceleration. This includes data at or above 95% in three categories:
- Cognitive ( CogAT, TEMA, TERA)
-
Achievement (CMAS, MAP, SAGES-3 Math/Science, TOMAGS)
-
Qualitative ( Parent, Student and Teacher Surveys)
